Korea University Anam Hospital, a public tertiary hospital under the Korea University Medical Center, recently implemented a cloud-based hospital information system.

Developed with support from the Korean government, HIS provides the 1,000-bed health facility with modules such as a mobile EMR, mobile personal health record and AI analysis. KU Anam has been using the system since March.

The hospital is currently undergoing a HIMSS Digital Health Indicator (DHI) assessment to assess the quality of the system.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

In addition to KU Anam, the HIS cloud has been extended to KU Guro and Ansan hospitals, allowing the three tertiary medical institutions to share clinical data via the cloud. It also facilitates their collaboration for the development of new AI and drug models.

By using HIS, KU Anam sees a potential reduction in medical expenses as duplicate exams are eliminated through the exchange of medical data between hospitals.

“The cloud-based hospital information system will lay the groundwork for high-quality medical data collection, enabling more accurate diagnosis and treatment to be provided to patients,” said Dr Sangheon Lee, head of the information center biomedical clinic of KU Anam, in an interview with Health informatics news.

Following its DHI assessment, the hospital wants to compare its system with other HISs around the world to determine if there is still room for improvement.

THE BROADER CONTEXT

During the interview, KU Anam also mentioned some other initiatives they are undertaking. One of them is standardized medical big data on its HIS cloud and building a clinical data warehouse that can run analytics and perform AI modeling based on big data. Through these initiatives, the hospital aims to promote the discovery of AI medical devices, new digital medicines and AI-based drug substances.

KU Anam undergoes the The HIMSS DHI assessment, which was introduced in April of last year. DHI helps healthcare systems assess their current levels of digital maturity and how they can improve it over time. It examines four key metrics or outcomes: governance and workforce, interoperability, human health, and predictive analytics.

In August of last year, the DHI framework was used in a in Queensland, Australia, which aimed to develop a data-driven roadmap for the digital transformation of state hospitals and healthcare facilities.

ON THE RECORD

“The quality of the implementation of patient-specific precision medicine using data will be the most important variable for future hospitals. Encouraging AI companies with the world’s best precision medicine technology to work with patients and hospitals is critical to developing the world’s best AI solution. In addition, the use of accumulated medical big data for research could be important for the development of precision medical AI and the development of new drugs, ”said Dr Lee.

“Hospitals that cooperate with AI companies will be important for future medical care. We believe that using the cloud system is the best way and that the best hospitals in the world will move gradually. [in] this direction. We darkened the [HIS] to create the world’s best quantitative and qualitative medical big data. The cloud system can be used by tertiary hospitals with more than 1,000 beds and allows multiple hospitals to use the same terminology, code and program. We have developed a big medical data platform so that medical data can be collected from multiple hospitals. On this basis, we plan to continuously develop and improve patient-friendly precision medical solutions and conduct big data research, ”he added.
