ATLANTA – Georgia’s university system board of regents on Tuesday approved a budget request of $ 2.57 billion for fiscal year 2023.

Although Gov. Brian Kemp has asked state agencies not to ask for more money next year, the system’s budget represents an increase of $ 108.1 million from the current spending plan of 2, $ 46 billion.

The additional spending covers items that were exempt from the governor’s order, Tracey Cook, the system’s executive vice chancellor for strategy and fiscal affairs, told Regents on Tuesday.

These items include $ 99.4 million to account for growth in student enrollments, nearly $ 9 million for changes to employee and retiree health insurance plans and $ 460,569 for a slight increase. of the area of ​​colleges and universities in the system.

The regents also approved a request for a capital budget of $ 278.8 million. The bulk of these funds – $ 108 million – would go to four major construction projects: $ 37.1 million for the first phase of modernization of Science Hill at the University of Georgia, $ 30.6 million for the third phase of Tech Square’s expansion at Georgia Tech. campus, $ 28.8 million for the Gateway Building at Georgia Gwinnett College and $ 11.5 million for an academic building on the Cumming campus of the University of North Georgia.

The capital budget request also includes $ 70 million for major repair and rehabilitation projects and $ 44.1 million for smaller construction projects on 11 campuses.

Operating and budget requests will be reviewed by the Governor’s Office for Planning and Budget. Kemp will present his spending recommendations to the General Assembly in January.
