The Healthy Heritage Movement works to address mental health disparities within the African American community of the Inland Empire.

In June, which is African American Mental Health Awareness Month, the organization partnered with five predominantly black churches to launch mental health resource stations in those churches to facilitate access. mental health information and services.

The participating churches are Cathedral of Praise International Ministries and Ecclesia Christian Fellowship, both in San Bernardino; Castle Rock Christian Fellowship and Rubidoux Missionary Baptist Church, both in Riverside; and Living Way Christian Fellowship in the Moreno Valley.

Healthy Heritage Movement plans to launch several initiatives in the coming months to reduce barriers preventing African Americans from accessing mental health services and to help the community recover from what has been a traumatic year, according to a statement. Press.

Initiatives include a Summer Healing Series, featuring Black psychologists and wellness coaches discussing mental wellness, healing, and self-care. Another initiative is to produce a comprehensive resource guide on African American mental health, which will be available in the fall.

Another ongoing project is the organization’s most recognized program, Broken Crayons Still Color Project, which has served 240 African-American women in the Inland Empire since its inception in 2018, according to the press release.

The eight-week program, written by Gloria Morrow, teaches women strategies for coping with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders. Participants also learn about prevention, early detection and intervention. The current session, presented virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, runs until July 10.
