The ShinyMind Mental Health Workforce Resilience and Wellbeing app is to be made available to all UK public and private sector organizations.

ShinyMind is the only MH workforce app to have received NHS ‘Proven Innovation’ status. To achieve this status, the app achieved the kind of impact and evidence-based review and rigor that medical equipment would be subject to approval for use in the NHS.

Rebecca Howard, Founder and CEO of ShinyMind and Leadership Psychotherapist and Behavior Change Expert, said: “The majority of mental health applications are based on CBT, but this is just one approach to psychotherapy. In order to provide a resource that works for most of us, we haven’t tied ourselves to just one approach; instead, we mixed elements from different psychotherapeutic approaches. Why? Because everyone is different with very different needs.

“Through a wide range of daily interactive activities, this multimodality of different approaches is reflected in ShinyMind, to help people find something that works for them. Likewise, mindfulness and meditation activities don’t work for everyone. For those – the majority – who cannot always understand and direct their own thoughts, guided meditation is better suited. This is also provided through the app.

Already available in dozens of NHS Trusts, hospitals and other care units, the app is now rolling out to the private sector, with the leading insurance broker, LifeSearch, as the official first adopter. ShinyMind has the ambition to be the go-to app for referrals from GPs across the UK and for UK businesses to adopt to support mental health and well-being at work.

Rebecca said, “Users are encouraged to customize the app and ‘get started’ so there is some graft involved, but from there you get the gold in terms of learning. This is what makes it so “sticky” unlike many other applications, where the average usage after 30 days is less than 10%. You put so much of yourself into ShinyMind that to remove it would be to take away a lot of your life.

James Mawrey, Director of Human Resources, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and Co-Chair of Human Resources Directors for Greater Manchester, said: “We are proud that Bolton NHS Foundation Trust was the first organization in the country to provide ShinyMind to its staff. He has played a key role in supporting us as individuals and on our teams over the past 18 months, and we are delighted that he has been awarded ‘Proven Innovation’ status by the NHS Innovation Agency. ShinyMind’s easy-to-use, uniquely human-centric approach to wellness has the potential to support many more organizations and people across a wide range of industries.
