Newfoundland and Labrador has 14 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, all in the province’s central health region.

Seven of the new cases are people under the age of 20. There is also one case between the ages of 20 and 39, two people in their forties, one in their fifties, two in their sixties and one aged 70 or over.

The sources of the 14 cases are under investigation. There are also 18 new presumptive positive cases in the province.

There are 116 active cases in the province, as public health reported seven new recoveries on Saturday. Two people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

There are 71 confirmed cases linked to a cluster in the Center region, an area currently facing the latest virus outbreak in the province.

Saturday’s update came via a press release from the Department of Health following Friday’s update that pushed the province’s active case count to levels not seen in more than six months.

A press release will also be released on Sunday, according to Health Minister John Haggie.

Haggie also tweeted on Saturday afternoon that more than 80 percent of the eligible population in Newfoundland and Labrador is now fully vaccinated. Over 88% of eligible people received at least one dose.

Testing continues

A total of 297,905 tests have been performed in Newfoundland and Labrador, an increase of more than 3,600 since Friday, as the campaign to identify new cases continues across the province.

Screening clinics continue in the Central Health area over the weekend, available at Fraser Road United Church in Gander on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.

The tests are also available at the George Hawkins Memorial Arena in Twillingate on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

No appointment is required at either test site.

According to Western Health, people in Woody Point who require testing will be offered an appointment at the Woody Point Medical Clinic.

The increase in cases has had a “major impact”: the mayor of Twillingate

Several communities in Newfoundland have now been on Alert Level 3 since Saturday, including Twillingate, New World Island and communities along Highway 340, from Boyd’s Cove and including.

Communities along routes 410 to 419 on the Baie Verte peninsula remain at Alert Level 3.

“It’s not the kind of news we wanted here,” Twillingate deputy mayor Wayne Greenham told CBC News on Saturday.

“It had a major impact this week on so many people.”

Greenham said while the increase in cases and increased public health restrictions can be frightening, he applauded residents for doing their part to limit the spread of the community.

He especially thanked the city’s caregivers and nurses, who he said have tested more than 600 people for COVID-19 in the past 72 hours.

“It impacts people. Emotionally, physically, mentally, you name it.”

Greenham said schools in the community are open for now, but that could change until Monday. The nearby New World Island Academy in Summerford suspended in-person classes earlier this week following a positive case of COVID-19.

In the meantime, he encouraged residents to continue to follow public health guidelines, monitor family in the community, and contact the city if they have any questions or concerns.

“Hopefully there will be soon, we’ll get this under control,” Greenham said.
