Saanich supports Connections Place with more than $ 18,000 for mental health programs through the District Strategic Initiative Fund.
The funding will help the organization balance its budget and deliver services to more people this year and into 2022.
Connections Place, located on Oak Street near Uptown, offers a community outreach to help residents with mental illness. Their main goal is to remind clients through workshops and support that their skills and talents are innate and distinct from their illness. All the services offered are free.
“With the community contributions of Saanich residents who have family members struggling with mental health issues, we realized that this type of facility was needed,†said Mayor Fred Haynes.
Connections services include employment, education and recreation initiatives to help people with mental illness. These include, but are not limited to, psychosis, PTSD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, OCD, and schizophrenia.
Chris Forester, the organization’s executive director, said they were trying to promote the breaking isolation message by staying connected.
“(We) are working to collaborate with other mental health service providers to really bring people into the community and help them understand that mental health is everywhere,†he said.
