LOS ANGELES, July 16, 2021 / PRNewswire / – In preparation for the return to face-to-face classes this fall, the LA Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan Community Resource Centers are hosting a series of back-to-school events where they will provide 25,000 bags FREE backpacks filled with school supplies for ages four and up. Drive-through and walk-in events take place throughout Los Angeles County of July 16 to August 14, and they are open to everyone.
A 2020 survey by NPR, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that a majority (61%) of households with children reported serious financial problems such as depleted savings as well. only difficulties in obtaining food. and pay their household bills. Moreover, the majority of these difficulties were concentrated among black and Latino households.
Both health plans, which primarily serve low-income populations in LA County, recognize that even as the economy rebounds, many families are still recovering from financial hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic – and what to prepare for for a new school year can put a strain on their finances.
âEvery year, the distribution of backpacks and school supplies attracts a large turnout, which is very indicative of the need for this type of help for many working families. mentionned John Baackes, CEO of LA Care. “Fortunately, community resource centers are designed to do just that – to meet the social needs of our communities. Health care should be more than just an ID card in your wallet.”
As part of their ongoing efforts to tackle food insecurity, at a number of back-to-school events, community resource centers will also distribute free food for families to take home.
“As so many people struggle to recover from the pandemic and the children prepare to return to class, we wanted to make sure that there are resources available in the communities where our resource centers are located,” mentionned Kristen Cerf, President and CEO of Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “With these back-to-school gifts, we continue our efforts to be an active participant in our community resource center communities. It brings me personal joy to invest in our youth and create opportunities to be the change we need right now to build healthy and vibrant communities. “
